The Right Questions To Ask Rental Companies About Their Fee

By Jason Hall On November 30, 2010 No Comments

Many times when a person is looking for a car rental, they call a few rental companies and take the one that gives them the lowest quote. The problem with this is that they do not get the total cost of the rental, and instead they are only getting the daily rental fee. There are many other components that factor into the total cost of your car rental, and these additional fees are not revealed until you arrive to pick up your car and have no other options but to pay more then you had expected.

There are many different factors that go into the rate that you eventually wind up paying for your vehicle rental. Understanding all the extras will allow you to make the best choice when it comes to choose a rental car company that won’t take you for a ride.

1. TAXES AND SURCHARGES- You may find that fees and taxes add up to a lot more per day than you realize, so when you are calling around for a quote, ask them to include these amounts in the daily or weekly rate they are quoting you. This will help you get a realistic view of how much you will be paying per day. Although, many companies may charge about the same for these fees, there are many reasons why companies choose to charge higher fees in certain locations.

2. MILEAGE- When you call for your quotes also be sure to ask what you mileage max is. Rental companies will often allow you only a certain amount of miles per free. If you should go over this amount you will find that the fees are large and you may end up spending hundreds of dollars more then you expected to. When asking about the mileage you should inquire if they offer an unlimited miles plan. This plan may add to your final cost, but it will save you from paying even more then that if you should go over the allowed mileage.

3. INSURANCE- This is something that the rental companies never hit you with until you pick up your car. It is an optional feature and you can choose to deny the coverage by signing a waiver. When calling for quotes ask what the price, per day, of the rental insurance is. Then you should contact your personal insurance company to find out if you are covered under your own insurance plan for rental vehicles. If you are then this is an additional cost that you can decline. If you are not covered then you will want to add the daily cost of rental insurance to the quote they you received.
